Welcome to our page celebrating World Carfree Day in 2026! We have a wonderful network of allies around the world, many of whom are holding World Carfree Day events in their hometowns. The theme for this year is

Fewer cars COOLER CITIES

There are good chances that you have recently experienced a heat wave, especially if you live in the northern hemisphere. And if you've been paying attention, you've heard that this year has been the hottest one on record. Breaking last year's heat record. And last year broke the heat record of the year before.

While parts of the world are ravaged by droughts and wildfires, others experience devastating floods. Sometimes the two occur side by side or follow one another in the same place. Storms have gained in intensity and cause a lot of damage. All indications point in the same direction: the human consumption of fossil fuels, mostly by the wealthy countries, is wreaking havoc throughout the world and particularly affecting those least responsible.

It would be easy to shrug our shoulders, and ask what a simple person can do in the face of global problems. Well, the worst thing we can do is give up, become apathetic, and just expect that nothing will change and protest is useless. We owe something much better than that to ourselves and to future generations.

What we can and should do, instead of accepting “the inevitable”, is to make a lot of noise. We can make noise internationally. We can let people in the wealthy countries know that they must dramatically and rapidly cut down on their use of fossil fuels. Greta Thunberg got it right when she said "The house is on fire." We need to come together at this time and fight hard for change. As if our lives depended on it.

So how can we create cooler cities? We decided that this year, for World Carfree Day 2026, we will release a new manifesto, dedicated directly to climate change and cities. Pssst: if any decision-makers are reading this, and are inclined to borrow from our manifesto to power up your city/region/nation's road map to a more sustainable future, then we salute you, and wish you all the luck in the world! For everyone else, please do all you can to speak up and demand that action is taken on climate, and on cooling our cities.

Collaborate with CCA for World Carfree Day!

If you read the intro section above, you'll have noted that we are calling on everybody to make some noise. Let's make some noise together!

Our plan this year is to put in some extra effort to get the word out by contacting local media. We have prepared a special opinion piece on the theme of climate and cooler cities. This is meant to be an adaptable text, that you are free to use and add any relevant information for your area. You can then send it around to your local newsletter, for instance, and suggest it as an op-ed in your name (like a letter to the editor) or any other format that works. The text can of course be translated to other languages.

Here is what we mean by collaborate: if you are interested in this, we would love to hear from you and also assist in any way. That could involve reviewing your letter with you, or considering the best options for where to send it. Please contact us at downtown@carfreealliance.org.

Celebrating World Carfree Day

Carfree event in Dhaka, Bangladesh

There are many wonderful activities that you an organize on World Carfree Day. Remember, one of the main goals is to make noise! We need to speak out and communicate our vision for better cities. Oh, and also have fun while doing that. :-) The following is a selection of several different activities you can do. Please download the PDF for the full menu. Our emphasis this year is to share our joyful vision with representatives of the local media establishment.

Leading up to WCD:

Write letters or opinion pieces and send to the newspaper or local magazines.
Free public ads, DIY. Print out posters and put them in sympathetic shops, cafes, or anywhere.

On the day or during the week:

Organize, preferably together with other local organizations and universities/colleges/schools, a fun, colorful, vibrant event on or near WCD 2026 (22 September). Possibilities include:
- A street party, complete with music, food, presentations, and information
- A group walk with banners
- Street theater
- Outdoor film screening
- An outdoor demonstration, with clear messages and demands
- An art competition, preferably with participants drawing/painting on a street that is taken back from cars, with the topic being a carfree street/neighborhood
A leaflet campaign or an essay campaign
Pop-up events such as pillow fights, dancing/singing, badminton, or other fun activities in the streets.
Hold a placard at traffic signals with a message and show it when the traffic light is red.

Later on:

Document (by writing and photos/videos) what you did for WCD 2024 and send to local newspapers, as well as posting on social media.
Send documentation of your event, along with specific policy demands (a protected bicycle lane, better walking conditions, higher parking fees, a congestion charge, improvements to the bus system, better maintenance of public spaces, etc.) to local policymakers
