In February 2024, the Carfree Cities Alliance (CCA) embarked on a transformative journey alongside esteemed partner organizations from South Asia. With the participation of influential entities such as the Nepal Cycle Society, Digo Bikas Institute, People’s Resource Centre, Institute of Wellbeing Bangladesh, and Work for a Better Bangladesh, our collective presence at the World Social Forum in Kathmandu, Nepal, ignited conversations and actions towards a sustainable future.

Engagement with Global Issues: Throughout our five-day tenure at the World Social Forum, we immersed ourselves in diverse activities aimed at addressing pressing global challenges. From actively participating in the climate rally to advocating for the preservation of open spaces in the Khula Maidan Bachao rally, we demonstrated our commitment to environmental conservation and social justice. Additionally, attending sessions focused on youth empowerment, climate change mitigation, gender-based rights, and discussions on river ecosystems deepened our understanding of multifaceted issues affecting our planet.

Organizing for Change: Amidst this enriching experience, the Carfree Cities Alliance and our partners organized a thought-provoking session titled "Cars, Capitalism, and Consumerism." This session served as a platform to critically examine the interconnectedness of transportation systems, economic structures, and consumption patterns, and their implications for sustainable development. Through engaging discussions and shared insights, we aimed to foster greater awareness and catalyze action towards building more equitable and environmentally responsible societies.

Looking Ahead: As we reflect on our participation in the World Social Forum 2024, we are inspired by the collective energy and dedication demonstrated by our partners and fellow advocates. Moving forward, the Carfree Cities Alliance remains committed to advancing our shared vision of car-free urban environments, promoting sustainable mobility solutions, and fostering inclusive communities worldwide. Together, we will continue to collaborate, innovate, and advocate for a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
