Brief overview

Kathmandu Valley has about 45 medieval settlements built before the invention of cars, that still function through socio-economic structures of the local economy. The government in its first national urban strategy had plans to regulate vehicles in the major historic cities but failed to bring the citizens on board in the plan. In 2014 many civil society organizations, and the local government came together to celebrate KtmWalks, the local version of carfree celebration, to bring awareness about the concept and its benefits. It succeeded to create a permanent Vehicle free Zone in the primate tourist area of Thamel in 2017. There are vehicle free squares in city centers that the government is now planning to extend to adjoining streets. Independent attempts of vehicle regulation in different parts of the country at small scales are being discovered, giving hope to build a strong national effort towards a carfree development.

Most important current issues

City Planning Commission of Kathmandu Metropolitan City is working to explore and extend vehicle regulation events beyond historic core areas. Biratnagar municipality is working to establish Carfree Zone in its Central Business district. Damak municipality has succeeded in establishing a vehicle free street.

Ongoing projects or campaigns

Carfree Cities Alliance is working to reestablish a network between institutions and campaigns for welfare of urban citizens. It is working with municipalities for the development of carfree development.

Successful previous projects

KtmWalks succeeded to execute vehicle free day celebration in seven different areas of Kathmandu metropolitan  in partnership of many civil society groups, ngos, youth clubs and cultural groups. It got disrupted by Earthquake of 2015 and hasn't been able to recover at its fullest form though efforts for restoration has been ongoing.
